This workshop will hone your beginner backpacking skills, while we will cover the fundamentals of backpacking, exploring the importance of proper planning, equipment selection, route selection, and important details that will make your trip fun and safe.

Instructor:  Silas Binkley, Heart-J Center's Education Program Manager, has been planning, leading, and supervising outdoor adventure education-based expeditions for twenty years. Silas has worked as an experiential education professional in the U.S. and Mexico for Colorado Mountain College and its academically rigorous Outdoor Semester in the Rockies program.  He’s also served as a faculty member and wilderness field guide in the MA in Environmental Leadership program at Naropa University.


Silas has logged hundreds of backcountry days in institutional leadership positions, spanning from the southwestern U.S. and Mexico to Australia, Nepal, Scotland, and more. One of his most memorable backcountry trips was a 600-mile hike along the Continental Divide from Nederland, CO to New Mexico.
